“I have been quite active in my church for a long time. I served on a committee called the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, which is sponsored by the U.S. Catholic Bishops. For a number of years we funded a small newspaper called The Endeavor, which published the stories of men on death row. This activity is what first got me interested in the subject. Then I found out that the U.S. Catholic Bishops had an official statement opposing the death penalty, which was published in 1980. When I subsequently learned about the inequities in how the death penalty is applied, and that Texas had almost three times the number of executions as any other state, I was hooked. I've been working to get the death penalty abolished ever since.”
