2012 Alabama January 8 - February 6

Justice and Mercy for All, an Alabama group committed to abolishing the state’s death penalty, is launching a statewide speaking tour that promises to inform, inspire and motivate. Equipped with cold hard facts, as well as the moving stories of people who have been released from death row, the “Journey of Hope” tour is coming to a town near you! Check the itinerary below and make your plans to attend.

Speakers vary during the tour. They will include state Sen. Hank Sanders, D-Selma, who has regularly sponsored legislation supporting a moratorium on executions in Alabama; Bill Pelke, founder of the group Journey of Hope from Violence to Reconciliation; and Callie Greer, a campaign organizer for Greater Birmingham Ministries who lost a member of her family in a murder and nonetheless opposes capital punishment. Other listed speakers are members of Justice and Mercy. All events are free to the public and will include opportunities for reflection and dialogue.

Jan. 10, Birmingham –  7:00 p.m., Bluff Park United Methodist Church, 730 Valley Street, Hoover. Bill Pelke and Fisher Humphreys will speak.
Jan. 12, Auburn –  6:00 p.m., Haley Center Auditorium, Room 2370. Speakers will include the mother of a murder victim, a retired policed chief, and a former death row inmate.
Jan. 12, Cullman –  7:00 p.m., Retreat Center at Sacred Heart Monastery, 916 Convent Rd. NE. Bill Pelke and Shelley Douglass will speak.
Jan. 17, Huntsville –  7:00 p.m., Trinity United Methodist Church, 607 Airport Rd SW. Bill Pelke and Fisher Humphreys will speak.
Jan. 19, Jacksonville –  6:30 p.m., Houston Cole Library on the JSU Campus. Bill Pelke and Brandon Fountain will speak.
Jan. 24, Demopolis –  7:00 p.m., Trinity Episcopal Church, 401 N. Main Street. Shelley Douglass and Tom Duley will speak.
